I've been doing more at work recently. I feel less like just a helper and more of an actual employee. We're adding an extension on one job. The digging was the least fun. Got the roof on last week, and we're doing wiring this week. It's starting to look more like a part of the house again, versus the gaping wound in the front of the house that it's been for a month.
Trying to get my boss to upload pictures of some of our work.

02:07 am - fire
Had a fire in the garage last weekend. Apparently, the master bedroom and the garage are on the same circuit breaker. The master bedroom is where the extension cords to the computer room are plugged in. Me running the circular saw in the garage pulled more current than the wire could handle + the breaker didn't trip = fire. It's nice to have an electrician for a neighbor.

Farewell, SciFi Channel.

Why don't they just call it USA2?
Update: Looks like it was a phony press release

11:58 am - a sudden turn of events
A classmate asked if I was interested in a soon-to-be-available internship at Cisco working on cost-analysis of proposed projects. There's some programming and SQL. I need to get more details.

I was driving home from class Wednesday night when I saw a loose dog wandering near a busy street. ( Read more... )

There were rats in the neighborhood, so the HOA put out rat poison. There used to be lots of squirrels, too. I've seen two dead squirrels and one not-so-healthy-looking one. I used to see dozens. I'm more distressed by this than I should be.
Could be that Monday is 3 months since Cotton.

07:03 am - temporary job
One of the neighbors has his own general contracting company. He asked this week if I'd be interested in working part-time as a helper for $10/hour. I get to work as much or as little as I choose, being able to take days off if I need to study. Seems like a pretty good deal. I helped install kitchen cabinets yesterday, pretty easy. This might work well for me. Plus, a friend of his is a recruiter for Yahoo, so there might be other opportunities once my programming skills have improved.

12:56 pm - studying
I seem to have a much easier time studying now than I did in college. Of course, I have considerably more free time these days, but I find myself getting less tired from intensive studying than I remember being years ago.

03:30 pm - java annoyance
I'm taking a java class over the summer, so I'm looking for decent free editors/compilers, and it's been a huge pain in the hinder.
JEdit: Downloaded most recent stable version. Requires plugins to compile. Plugins require beta version of JEdit. Download beta version. Plugins crash editor. I'd rather not have to learn to debug java before being able to run the freakin' editor. Two hours wasted.
Eclipse: Managed to run "Hello world!" after only one crash. Editor crashed immediately thereafter. Maximum run time before crash: 4 minutes.
NetBeans: Requires machine 3 years younger than laptop with most recent not-free version of windows.
Still have a few more applications to try out.

06:54 pm - food safety
I distinctly remember that food was supposed to be safe for 24 hours in an unopened refrigerator if the power went out. I can no longer find the government reference I found previously. However, now the FDA says 4 hours, etc. (warning: pop-ups)

Saw the recent remake of The Stepford Wives. I don't remember a commerical or review stating that it was a comedy. The combination of science fiction and comedy was much more British than I was expecting.

02:27 pm - internship program update
Nothing for my qualifications again this quarter. All of the computer-related internships want near-graduates in computer science. The rest of the internships are administrative assistants.
Of note: one of the internships wanted Delphi and Object Pascal. Kooky.
